Tourism Enhancement Fund

Company Description: The “Tourism Enhancement Act, 2004,” passed by Parliament in December 2004 and subsequently revised in October 2011, provided the legal basis for the establishment of a mechanism for the collection of a small fee from incoming airline and cruise passengers.

Specifically, the Act allows for:

  • A Tourism Enhancement Fee of US$20.00 to be charged to incoming airline passengers and US$2.00 to be charged to cruise passengers.

  • The monies collected are paid into a dedicated Tourism Enhancement Fund.

The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) was established on May 1, 2005, for the sole purpose of implementing the recommendations emanating from the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development, 2002.

The Tourism Master Plan provides the framework in which TEF will fulfill its mandate of promoting growth and development in the tourism sector, encouraging better management of environmental resources in Jamaica, enhancing the country’s overall tourist experience, and providing for the sustainable development of the tourism sector.

Companies Office of Jamaica

Company Description: The Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ) is an executive agency in charge of the administration of the Companies Act (2004), the Registration of Business Names Act (1963), and the Security Interests in Personal Property Act (SIPP) of 2013. The agency is responsible for the registration and regulation of companies and business names, as well as, the provision of related services.

The COJ has four main roles – to register and regulate companies and businesses, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records on commercial entities and administer the National Security Interests in Personal Property Online Registry. 
Through its website, the public can check a company’s or business’ current:

  • Legal status
  • Statutory compliance
  • Ownership

The COJ registers local and overseas companies and individuals and firms carrying on business in Jamaica. It actively encourages voluntary compliance of companies and businesses with the Companies Act of 2004, the Companies (Amendment Act) 2013, the Registration of Business Names Act of 1934. Where necessary, the COJ initiates court action against delinquent clients to ensure compliance with all provisions of the law. It also removes entities which have been wound up and those which the Registrar has reason to believe are not in operation.

Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN)

Company Description: The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) was established under the Statistics (Amendment) Act 1984 on April 9, 1984. The Institute has been invested with all the powers formerly vested in the Department of Statistics and previously the Bureau of Statistics (which came into existence in 1946). The Statistical Institute of Jamaica is an agency of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation. 

The main functions of the Institute are:

  • to collect, compile, analyze, abstract and publish statistical information relating to the commercial, industrial, social, economic and general activities and condition of the people;
  • to collaborate with public agencies in the collection, compilation, and publication of statistical information including statistical information derived from the activities of such agencies;
  • to take any census in Jamaica; and generally to promote and develop integrated social and economic statistics pertaining to Jamaica and to coordinate programmes for the integration of such statistics, in accordance with the provisions of the Statistics Act.
